Mother's Day Opportunity
Please
assist us in helping uninsured women in New York City get the
breast cancer screening services they need by making a give to
the American-Italian Cancer Foundation's (AICF) Mobile
Mammography Program in honor or memory of your mother,
grandmother, wife, sister, daughter or friend on Mother's Day.
If you wish, we will send a special card to the person being honored to let her know that you have made a gift on her behalf.
Last year AICF's no-cost Mobile Mammography Program provided breast cancer screening to 5,478 economically disadvantaged and medically underserved women in New York City. Of these women, 3,437 were uninsured. Due to New York State budget cuts, AICF will not be able to serve several thousand of these uninsued women this year, unless we are able to secure approximately $400,000 in additional financial support. Many of these women cannot afford to be screened and face language and cultural barriers to accessing services. Of course, many other women will need our services this year as well, as unemployment rises and they lose their health insurance.
During the most recent five-year period, 22 women per year, on average, have been diagnosed with breast cancer through the Mobile Mammography Program's efforts. As a result of the State budget cuts, it is probable that an increased number of uninsured women will forego mammograms and clinical breast exams, which will most likely result in many more with late-stage breast cancer at the time of diagnosis. A recent study has shown that 8 percent of women with private health insurance are diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer, compared to 18 percent of uninsured women. Early detection is the key to survival.
